Driving home from the hairdresser, my hair neatly done and shielded from the rain, I found myself pausing to observe people walking in the rain. There’s something deeply human and beautifully simple about these scenes. People, each with their own story, walking in the light rain – some hurrying, others taking their time, enjoying the rain.
I love rain for more than just watching it fall. I enjoy waiting for it, the calm feeling after it stops, and the fresh earthy smell that comes after. Watching from my car, I felt cozy but also a bit jealous of those outside feeling the rain.
Everyone I took pictures of acted differently in the rain. Some walked fast, while others enjoyed every drop, looking up and smiling. These pictures show how differently people enjoy the rain.

In Greek, “philos” means love, and “ia” is about quality. So, “philia” (or “filia” in English) is about loving something a lot. “Pluvium” relates to rain. Put together, “pluviophilia” means really loving the rain and everything about it. But it’s not a serious condition; it’s just about liking rain a lot.
Loving rain isn’t just about enjoying it when it’s falling. You also love the moments before and after it rains – like the way the air feels before a storm and the earthy smell, called mitti ki khushboo, after the rain stops. This makes you feel calm and helps you focus on the here and now.
Even if you don’t go out in the rain, if you love watching it fall from inside, feeling peaceful as you see and hear it, then you’re a pluviophile. The sound of rain is like music to you, and watching it is one of your favorite things.
And if you’re in Mauritius … Curepipe is the spot to get rain ! (Mauritians will understand)
